The Decorate-A-Smiley Project

Put on a Happy Face

National Humor Month has established a project that combines visual creative arts with laughter and humor.

Everyone (all ages, schools, etc.) is invited to decorate and embellish a Smiley Face with their own creative expression...artistic, whimsical, symbolic, whatever. The project is also an homage to Harvey Ball, the artist who designed the Smiley Face. World Smile Day is in October, but there's no time like the present!

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Start with a smiley face of any size. Make your own, maybe using a paper plate, or start with the 13" diameter Smiley Face cutouts shown in the above examples. You can get them at www.smileystore.com (enter LAUGH in the code for your discount).

  2. Use any media and mixed media for your decoration. Paint, markers, crayons, glue-on objects, decoupage…whatever.

  3. Follow your own sense of humor, whimsy, and instinct, or follow a theme such as happy birthday, I love you, Get Well, Peace, Cheer, I Miss You, Congratulations, any holiday…whatever.

  4. You may submit a digital image of your completed Smiley by clicking here (we'd love to see you in the photo, too).
